- I'm a Nurse. I don't want to time the market; I don't want to even think about it. I want to buy and hold ETFs, so that I can participate and support a global economy that I trust is efficient, and intelligent, and that has accurately priced the tens of thousands of companies that I invest in.
Unfortunately, since I started investing after graduating in 2009, I have not trusted the financial system and have been fearing the next crash. Still, historically to "buy and hold, stay fully invested", is apparently the best long-term strategy, and that's what I did, until a few months ago.
Now my concerns about accountability, living within our means, trying to sustain a growth-based economy on an environmentally strained planet have all combined to make me realize that not only do I not trust this system, I don't believe in it. I don't want to support it and I don't want to be a part of it. I happened to be in cash in Feb and never went back to my buy and hold strategy.
I want to invest in something I believe in. Something sustainable. Something that will allow me to access my savings when I need them and I can't work anymore. Maybe even a little more than the amount of savings I deposit. An amount that allows international markets to invest in the poor, so that they get a chance to be productive and innovative too. An amount that the planet can sustain long-term, while I keep skiing and caving and doing the things I love.
